Despite the fact that 1 in 4 women will experience pelvic pain in their lifetime, and the vast majority of women will navigate unique challenges related to reproduction and hormonal changes across the lifespan, these topics are simply not discussed publicly. This can result in a sense of shame and secrecy, and lost opportunities for women to share with and support one another.

Over the last year, we have run 3 rounds of Chronic Pelvic Pain Skills Group and two rounds of Women's Health Support Group at Rezenity Health. In my role as group leader, I have been struck time and again by the power of women supporting each other. As reflected in the quotes above, participants have found a sense of connection, belonging and mutual support with their fellow group members. This has helped them feel less alone and more empowered to tackle challenges.

During our first year of group at Rezenity Health, we've gathered insights about how group work compares to individual treatment, and what makes group a powerful tool for women's health issues. Below are some key observations and themes that have emerged from our experiences.

Group vs. Individual Treatment

Group work offers unique opportunities that differ from individual sessions. It allows individuals to be vulnerable while also experiencing a sense of belonging and support from their peers. Engaging with other women who share raw feelings of isolation, misunderstanding, and dismissal related to their health fosters empowerment. Witnessing others going through similar struggles in real time creates hope that physical, emotional, and social wellness are achievable goals.

Reducing Isolation and Building Community

One of the most notable benefits of group work is the sense of community it builds. It encourages participants to open up, share their experiences, and support each other. This collective experience helps women realize they are not alone, which can be incredibly motivating in their journey toward wellness.

Peer Support Increases Accountability

Participants also focus on committing to actions that serve their well-being. The ability to check in with one another, hold each other accountable, and offer constructive feedback fosters an environment where individuals prioritize their needs and wants. Together, women connect over shared values and engage in practical, meaningful discussions about redefining what wellness means to them.

Common Themes in Group Discussions

Several recurring themes have arisen during group sessions, including self-advocacy, preventative health measures, role expectations, and the impact of physical and emotional struggles on personal identity.

Evolution of Group Dynamics

Over time, group dynamics have evolved from initial hesitation and self-consciousness to a supportive environment where women consistently show up for one another. The atmosphere remains nonjudgmental and welcoming, embodying a "Come As You Are" approach. This openness and acceptance are infectious and continue to strengthen the group's cohesion.

What Group is NOT

It's important to understand that group sessions are not about commiserating over hardships. Instead, they focus on gathering collective strength and compassion to motivate each other. The goal is to foster resilience and growth through shared support and understanding,
